Obstetrics and Gynecology
The two main reasons for acute gynecologic admissions at Tenwek Hospital are ectopic pregnancies and bleeding from incomplete abortion. Most of these are usually spontaneous, but a few are induced in unsafe circumstances. Cervical cancer is the leading gynecologic tumor. Most patients present at an advanced stage.
- All general gynecologic services every Wednesday
- Family planning; Monday to Friday excluding public holidays
- Pap smears
- Limited fertility and cancer treatment
This is a 72-bed unit which currently houses both Obstetric and Gynecology clients. Approximately 3000 (3388 in 2010) deliveries are conducted annually with a Caesarean Section rate of 22 to 28%. Eighty percent (80%) are done as emergencies. There is one operating room in maternity. The main theatre is used when there are more cases or at night. Gynecology cases account for less than 10% of admissions. The majority are done for elective surgeries.
